Provenance:collected by Martius before 1914, acquisition by the Grassi Museum, Leipzig 1920, then collection F. Reiter, BerlinThe tribe of Iatmul, which can be found at the middle Sepik river, coated skulls of important, deceased men with reddish clay. Then a new face was modeled and decorated with the former face painting of the members. Such skulls were then honored ritual in ceremonies.Literature:

The skull is in good, age related condition with usual signs of age and wear. Partially missing hair strands and shells. The dimensions are c. 15 x 22 cm.
