This is the rating and price for Helmet Mask Sowei Mende, Sierra Leone
Description : Helmet mask sowei Mende, Sierra Leone wood, shiny blackish brown patina, of high towering vaulted form, the facial plane concentrated on a rather small area within the lower third, embedded in ring-shaped bulges which are duplicated in the neck area, harmonical facial features with open worked small eyes, crowned by an elaborate helmet-like headgear including six disc-shaped elements, surmounted by a three-parted top with central knob, min. dam., slight signs of abrasion, insect caused damage, presumably a work of the Master of Nguabu. Unfortunately, the name of the carver is not known. Undoubtedly he was commissioned by the sande in many different towns and it is not certain where he actually lived. The corpus of works by this artist numbers well over two dozen pieces including two examples that entered the British Museum collections in 1943. Masks by the Nguabu Master were still being used well into the 1970's. It seems likely that this artist was active during the 1920's to the 1940's.
