This is the rating and price for Greek Corinthian Pottery Vase - Ex Christie'S, 2004

Description : Greece, Corinth, ca. early 6th century BCE. A pretty vase with ornate decoration in the manner of the London Frauenfest Painter: black and red painted and incised decoration around its center that depicted two peacocks and several standing women, each with long hair that falls down their backs. These depictions of women are a hallmark of the Frauenfest style, with figures often differentiated in age by their heights (as they are here) and shown with wine paraphernalia such as bunches of grapes and vessels. This round-bodied vase stands on a disc-shaped foot and has a flared, sloping mouth and a narrow rim. The rim and shoulder are decorated with dots and lines, while the base is painted to give it a scalloped appearance. Size: 3.85 W x 3.1 H (9.8 cm x 7.9 cm) During this time, Corinthian plates showed the influence of eastern trade connections with the city - creating art with stylized plants and animal friezes, inspired by trade with the Levant, Egypt, and Assyria. This is known as the Orientalizing Period. The peacocks reference the animals kept by nobility at the time. The incised detail, combined with trade from Corinth to Attica, may have inspired the incised silhouettes of the slightly later black-figure period.
