Fish, in particular the mudfish, symbolized peace, prosperity, and fertility to the Benin tribe. Tradition has that the mudfish symbolized the Oba's position between mortal men (on the land) and the spirit world of Olokun, the god of the water, because it lives close to the riverbank.
