Description : Antique African Benin Bronze Fish Sculpture | Bronze fish crafted by hand by the West African Benin Tribe using the lost wax method and use of coiled wires to form the fish scales and other details. Figure is standing on 4 legs. Approx. Size: 16 long x 6.5 high, Weight: 3.8 lbs. Fish, in particular the mudfish, symbolized peace, prosperity, and fertility to the Benin tribe. Tradition has that the mudfish symbolized the Oba's position between mortal men (on the land) and the spirit world of Olokun, the god of the water, because it lives close to the riverbank. Provenance: Prominent Private Ethnographic Collection, Estate of Paul S. Hughey, Previously on loan with the Mississippi Museum of Art.
