Description : Canvas with stucco (cardboard), gilded Egypt, late Ptolemaic or early Roman Period Fragment of a gilded mummy mask The relief depicts a scene of deities Dimensions: 21 x 4.3 cm (width x height) Provenance: Private Collection Bruno Wertz Scientific research: Dr. Jan Moje, Free University of Berlin (see references below) A sample of a complete mummy mask is held by National Museums Scotland in Edinburgh (A.1911.275) This cut out segment of a cardboard once formed the lower part of a mummy mask with breast area. The piece originates from Egypt, the late Ptolemaic or the early Roman Period (c. 100 BC-AD 100). The stuccoed surface was subsequently embellished with a gilded coating. Starting during Ptolemaic times, a tradition of such masks with covered head and breast areas became known. A surrounded scene with five seated deities in front of each otheris depicted, separated by a centrally placed, stylised djedpillar. The pillar is made of bundled grain, symbolising the spine of the god of vegetation and death, Osiris of Abydos. In ancient Egypt, the placing of the pillar was celebrated in a ceremony. On the left side of the relief there are five crouching figures with human heads and long wigs, holding a Maat feather. The feather of the goddess Maat decided if the souls of the deceased would reach paradise in the afterlife. The same is largely the case for the right side of the depiction. The last figure seems to be a standing deity. The segment of a mummy mask is in astonishingly well-preserved condition, with minimal traces of age. The surface is surviving well. Some surface cracks are visible. The rim is frayed. The piece of canvas is mounted in a wooden frame and laid down in a dark green cloth matte. The dimensions of the mask fragment are 21 x 4.3 cm (width x height), and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 25.4 x 41 (width x height).
