Description : West Africa, Guinea, Baga peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A skillfully carved and beautifully painted wooden female figural bust with an elaborate coiffure comprised of lobed, 'combed' sections and hands placed upon exposed pendulous breasts, wearing a rippling skirt that doubles as a concave base pedestal - all painted in a rich color palette of jewel tone reds and blues. Size: 20 H (50.8 cm) This piece was exhibited in Materals Transformed: The Art of African Sculpture from the Mary Sue and Paul Peter Rosen Collection at the Free Library, Gallery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 2012.
