Description : Egypt, Ptolemaic Period, ca. 332 to 30 BCE. A lid from an anthropoid coffin, so finely carved, with a naturalistic heart-shaped face replete with human features including gently arching, articulated brows, almond shaped, sfumato eyes, a long, straight nose, pursed lips, and a delicate chin emerging from the neck. Traces of gesso and pigmentation. Incredible that original wooden dowels remain as well. Custom stand. Size: 5.125 W x 10.25 H (13 cm x 26 cm), 12.75 H (32.4 cm) on stand. Provenance: Ex-Meyerson collection, acquired via family descent, acquired at Nassar Brothers Antiquities, Cairo, 1972.
