Description : New Kingdom, 1550-1070 BC. A bronze amuletic figurine (nekhau) of a tilapia fish modelled in the round with large dorsal fin, round-section attachment peg to the underside. Property of a London gentleman, acquired by his father in the 1970s, thence by descent. Cf. Andrews, C. Amulets of Ancient Egypt, London, 1994, plate 69. The tilapia fish was sacred to the goddess Hat-Mehyt who had a cult centre in the north east of the Nile delta at Mendes. The tilapia was a symbol of rebirth and was also believed to accompany and protect the sun god on his daily journey across the sky. 51 grams, 76mm (3).
