Description : Ancient Egypt, Old Kingdom, 3rd to 6th Dynasty, ca. 2686 to 2181 BCE. A charming bowl carved from porphyritic diorite of black and yellow-white hues that was used for holding minute volumes of fine cosmetic material. The bowl exhibits a round but stable base, convex walls, and a thick rim that surrounds the shallow basin. The basin was formed by utilizing copper drill bits and copious amounts of abrasive sand, and several of the original drilling striations are still visible along the surfaces.
