Description : Ancient Egypt, Middle Kingdom, 11th to 13th Dynasty, ca. 2130 to 1640 BCE. A finely preserved scarab amulet carved from white steatite that features an image along the bottom of Hapi, an androgynous deity associated with the annual flooding of the Nile. The topside exhibits minimalist insectile details like sinuous legs and a narrow triangular head, and a suspension hole is biconically drilled lengthwise through the body. Incised across the bottom is an abstract image of Hapi kneeling and wearing a crosshatched kilt while extending one arm out in front.
