Description : EGYPT. New Kingdom-Third Intermediate Period. Ca. 1570-712 BC. Gold Double Lotus Pendant. Approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) square, approximately 2 grams, in the form of a U with each of the flaring ends representing a lotus blossom. Cf. C. Andrews Amulets of Ancient Egypt, plate 65, image B for single lotus. From the Living Torah Museum Collection, acquired from Time Machine Company (David Liebert). The lotus was considered a sacred flower in Egypt, and it remains the national flower to this day. Egyptian column capitals were modeled on the funnel-shaped lotus blossom, and the motif carried through into all the decorative arts, including jewelry. Lotus amulets were thought to provide strength and protection for women during childbirth.
