Description : West Africa, Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire, Dan peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A fabulous example of a mask from the Dan peoples, skillfully hand-carved from mocha-hued wood. The minimalist visage displays petite, slit-form eyes beneath a protruding brow, a straight nose with broad nostrils, a semicircular mouth with full lips held open, and a pointed chin. A series of 3 parallel, incised striations wrap vertically around the periphery of the face, while desiccated earth and a petite wooden spike pointed outwards at the top of the head. The edge of the vizard is lined with annular drill holes allowing it to be strapped to the headdress or costume of the wearer. Size: 5.8 W x 9.2 H (14.7 cm x 23.4 cm), 13.5 H (34.3 cm) on included custom stand. Cf. the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, accession number A110.
