It features a concave face, pointed chin, protruding mouth, a high and rounded forehead with scarification marks, red triangular shapes around slit eyes, and a rich brown/ black patina. All of these are key characteristics found in traditional Dan masks. This could be seen as a female mask that represent ideal beauty due to the oval shape face, slightly prominent forehead, slit eyes, thin nose, and open mouth. The mask could also be interpreted as a zapkei ge mask due to the red patina around the eyes. It is responsible to warding off fires and would watch over domestic fires.  These masks are sacred to the Dan people. They do not represent the spirits but rather are the spirits. When used in ceremonial dances, the dancer (often male) becomes the spirit. The masks act as protective devices, symbols of social belonging, or bearers of messages. The Dan people often wear small 'passport masks' as protection when living away from home.
