Description : AFRICAN TRIBAL ART, CARVED WOOD BABANKI MASK - Western Cameroon Grasslands. This mask represents the skull of an elephant, hence the absence of a fleshy trunk. In Babanki culture, the importance of skulls is noted, it was thought that ancestral spirits are embodied in the skulls of dead ancestors, skulls were housed in family dwellings. Masks such as this were used in initiation and education purposes. Condition good. First half 20th century. 18H x 11W
