Description : Intricate Benin bronze currency sculpture, c. 1920s, 1930s. Currency sculpture depicts two fighters with knives on horses, warped into open circle shape. Bronze sculpture measures approx 6.5 inches in height by 13 inches in diameter. African Art, Tribal Art, African sculpture, ethnographic Art, African folk art, collectible African arts. Property of a New York Private Collection. The fighters with weapons on horseback in this sculpture symbolize power, and was a decorative object used as currency or bridewealth. ‘Bridewealth is the exchange of currency or valuable goods and services to acknowledge all that the bride brings to her husband and his family, including the hope of descendants.’ (info from Smithsonian National Museum Of African Art). 7
