In the Troad they met Lusieri and Preaux, who were working for Lord Elgin. Preaux sold a number of drawings to Clark, and many of the plates in Clarke's work are based on these drawings, Clarke continued on to Egypt with Abercromby's force, and joined W.R. Hamilton, Elgin's secretary, in a self-constituted deputation to prevent Egyptian antiquities from being carried off by the French. From Egypt he went to Greece, where he managed to secure the colossal statue - the so-called Ceres - from Eleusis, and a number of other antiquities (Blackmer 365). (7)
