This is the rating and price for Bifacial Flint Projectile Point
Description : **First Time At Auction**
Egyptian, late Neolithic to Predynastic period, ca. 5000 to 3100 BCE. A choice hand knapped bifacial flint projectile point with a hollow base, known as a Fayum (Faiyum) point for the area they are often discovered. The point is very distinctive with a deep concave base and very prominent wings or 'ears' which are elegant but often the first pieces to break off from the point - here they are still intact, making this a very rare and finely preserved example! The flint is a pretty espresso brown hue, with delicate flaking patterns. These projectile points have the deepest bases of any culture around the world, and the function is still unknown. If the points were utilitarian, they may have been hafted as arrow or spear tips and the wings were intended to break off into the target upon impact - or they may have had a ceremonial function! Size: 1.55 L x 0.75 W (3.9 cm x 1.9 cm)
Provenance: private Toronto, Ontario, Canada collection, by descent, acquired in Egypt in 1894 to 1896
