Description : Mask. Watercolor on cream wove paper, circa 1929. 311x230 mm, 12 1/4x9 1/8 inches. Signed in ink, lower left. Ex-collection the artist and Kennedy Galleries, New York, with the label on the frame back. In good condition with strong colors. The current work is among a series of watercolors that Shahn made after travels to North Africa in 1924-25 and 1927-29 which clearly reveal the influence of African art and artifacts. He returned to the mask theme several times later in his career, notably in 2 lithographs from 1959 and 1963 (Prescott 39 and 51).
