Description : West Africa, Ivory Coast, Baule, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A fine pair of hand-carved wooden figures from the Baule known as blolo bla (literally dream wife) and blolo bian (literally dream husband) - ancestral sculptures that would be placed in the home and looked after attentively as they were believed to act as mediums between the living and spiritual realms. Both the shorter female and taller male stand with delineated legs atop integral plinths, hold their arms to their scar-adorned abdomens, and wear strands of colorful resin beads on their waists. Their elongated heads and necks boast further ritual scarification marks, semicircular eyes, slender noses, and puffy lips beneath incised, crested coiffures. The female figure also wears a brass ornament around her neck that hangs from a strand of white beads. Condition report : Small losses to plinth of female figure as shown. Both figures have minor abrasions to legs, bodies, arms, and heads, with softening to some finer details, light encrustations, and a few stable fissures. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
