Description : **First Time At Auction** Western Africa, Cote d'Ivoire, Baule (Baoule) people, ca. mid-20th century CE. A remarkable wood Goli mask featuring a serene female visage - a representation of the beau ideal of the Baule people - crowned by an incised coiffure in an elaborate updo and a bird standing atop a hemispherical object, all adorned in vibrant pigments of orange, emerald, scarlet, white, and black. Dominated by a sizeable domed forehead, the vizard gazes downward from slender eyes beneath arched brows, and presents a naturalistic nose, full lips in a warm smile, and protruding ears. A square of gridded ceremonial scarification embellishes both of her temples.
