Description : Baule Drumstick
Ivory Coast
The Baule (also Baoulé) are an African people with a population of approx. one million mainly inhabiting central Ivory Coast. Baule art is sophisticated and stylistically diverse. The sculptor's profession is not inherited, but is a personal choice. The Baule have various types of wooden sculptures and masks that allow for closer contact with the supernatural world.
An extremely finely carved Baule drum kit. A male figure carries the upper part of the kit, which is a semi-circle showing two faces and partly wrapped with fiber. The figure is standing on a round base, slightly kneeling, hands on the belly, and with a typical Baule coiffure. A rare object with a shiny patina!
