The Baule (also Baoulé) are an African people with a population of approx. one million mainly inhabiting central Ivory Coast. Baule art is sophisticated and stylistically diverse. The sculptor’s profession is not inherited, but is a personal choice. The Baule have various types of wooden sculptures and masks that allow for closer contact with the supernatural world.
A very beautiful knife with a leather case. The case is a work of art with a precious shell in the middle. You have to admire the artist’s ability to make a common tool into such a nice work of art. These weapons were usually used for initiation rites.
