This is the rating and price for Baule Carved Wood Ceremonial Mask

Description : This beautiful authentic mask was carved from wood in the late 20th century by the Baule tribe in the Ivory Coast, Africa. This mask was used in ceremonial divination rituals, and shows a patina from having been danced.Among the Baule peoples of Cote d'Ivoire, human experience evolves out of, and is inextricably linked to, the spirit world. This ''blolo'' or ''village of truth'' controls and determines the fate of the living. Divination masks such as this one served as links to the spirit world, and are critical to the professional practice of Baule diviners. The Baule are one of the largest ethnic groups in the Ivory Coast, and have played a central role in the history of the country throughout the twentieth century. This tribe waged the longest war of resistance against European colonialism fighting the French, and have thus been able to maintain their traditional objects and beliefs longer than many groups.Provenance:These pieces were collected over a period of several decades out of collections from America and throughout Europe, including France, Germany, Belgium, and Amsterdam beginning in the early 1960s. The items in this collection have been identified by George Mack, former director of the Arizona African Art Museum.A fantastic piece that's perfect for your collection!Piece shows signs of use with a very nice patina. Some slight cracking to the wood on the front. Overall in very good condition for its age.
