Alice Tully (1902-1993), known as a major benefactor to the arts in general and to music in particular, gave the city of New York the concert hall which bears her name at Lincoln Center and sponsored concert series at the Pierpont Morgan Library and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. She was herself a trained opera singer and occasionally performed in her early years. Her work as a benefactor began in earnest in 1958 when she inherited the estate of her grandfather, William Houghton, founder of the Corning Glass Works. Her art collection spanned all periods and categories. Her interest in Egyptian antiquities may have stemmed in part from the excavations carried out by her amateur archaeologist brother-in-law John Dimick in the Nile Valley at Memphis (see Irwin S. Scherzer, Miss Alice Tully, in Christie's, op. cit., p. 15). For a recent account of her life as a music patron see Albert Fuller, Alice Tully: An Intimate Portrait, Urbana, Ill., 1999.
