Description : An animal headdress mask with dark patina. Mali, Bamana. 20th century. 20 1/2h x 6 3/4w x 9 1/2d. Provenance: Inventory and Collection from the Estate of Merton D. Simpson. Catalog Notes: Oron carved ancestral figures are believed to be some of the oldest surviving wooden sculptures from sub-Saharan African. Until well into the twentieth century the creation of these figures was an important part of elevating elders to the high ancestral status. They were believed to help their families prosper. They would be kept in a shrine by the eldest member of the familial line were many generations of their forebears were honored.
