Provenance: Inventory and Collection from the Estate of Merton D. Simpson. Catalog Notes: Though occasional used a lineage mask during memorial cermonies for the dead, the elephant mask is rarely used as like the leopard, the elephant is considered a royal animal and can only be worn and represented by particular familial lines. Because of the signifgance of the elephant, when the dance mask is used it follows second after the dance leader of the ceremony and is one of the last figures to exit.
