In 1911 Matton was commissioned by the Belgian Colonial Ministry to study the people of the Congo. Like Charles Cordier, half a century earlier, he travelled to Africa, making on his first trip alone, forty-three plaster busts of native Congalise and amassing a large collection of local artefacts, many of which play an important role in the subjects of his sculptures. The present sculpture is typical of Matton's early work, showing a picturesque, but ethnographically studied view of native life. See also the following lot.
