Description : Details: This lot consists of a remarkable antique album of travel photographs taken on a trip across the Pacific in 1907 by 23 year-old Dudley Ward Fay. Fay went on to earn a Ph.D. and publish an important study in medical psychiatry, and his intelligence, curiosity, and attention to observation and detail enliven this album. Photographs are in black & white and sepia, with some hand-colored, and a few larger, panoramic photos. Brief captions identify people, and describe destinations, sites, and hotels in the pictures. Some photos feature Fay and his friends, and others document the sights of a grand mansion in College Hill, Ohio, Yellowstone National Park and San Francisco, Pasadena, Riverside, and Long Beach, California, Hawaii, Japan, Korea, and China. Also included in the album are color photo postcards from Japan, and fourteen cards with original artwork. Additional materials include a hand-written vellum passport, tucked inside an envelope pasted to the front cover. The passport is signed by then-Secretary of State Elihu Root. The reverse side bears consular stamps from Russia, Turkey, and Egypt. Pasted inside is an envelope labeled Honolulu, containing a souvenir brochure for Waikiki Beach. The section on Japan has an envelope with a map, a newspaper clipping comparing Japanese and western peoples, and a Brochure sent to me from guide after return home. Single photos torn from pp. 7 and 18. Wear to spine extremities/rubbing to leather, but binding still secure. Light rubbing to board edges. Dust soiling to envelopes on front cover of album.
