Description : Romano-Egyptian, ca. 100 century BCE to 100 CE. Attractive bronze lid to a small seal box, decorated with added glass enamel in shades of red and green. It is thought that seal boxes were most likely part of the communication process or mail delivery system of the Roman military as they are most commonly found in areas of heavy legionary presence. Size: 1-1/4L (33 mm). Provenance: Ex-private Philip Mitry collection. Mr. Mitry was a noted licensed seller of antiquities in Cairo until 1951, at which time he emigrated to the US.
