Description : West Africa, Nigeria, Bura-Asinda-Sikka, ca. 1050 CE. A highly stylized stone figure with an abstract anthropomorphic form. The sandstone is hand carved with an elongated body that tapers to a narrow base. The top features a corseted neck and a bulbous head. At one time there may have been a face carved into the surface to represent an ancestor or deity. The stake shape may have been inserted in the ground as a marker for a grave. Size: 13.5 L x 4 W (34.3 cm x 10.2 cm) Provenance: private Houston, Texas, USA collection, purchased from Hammill Gallery, Boston, Massachusetts, USA in 2016 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
