About the lot N° 226
Title : An Egyptian turquoise glazed faience amulet of Taueret
Provenance : Provenance: Antiquities and Souvenirs of the Grand Tour; Christie's, London, 4 November 1992, lot 164. Private collection, London, acquired from the above. Cf. C. Andrews, Amulets of Ancient Egypt, British Museum, 1994, pp.40-41, fig.39b. Carol Andrews observes that although the male hippopotamus was considered the epitome of evil, the female although fierce was considered benevolent and protective. Taueret, with her pregnant woman's body, bared hippopotamus teeth and crocodile's tail came to be considered the forceful protector of women in childbirth.
