Description : Period of Queen Nefertiti, Dynasty XVIII, 1353-1335 B.C. Perhaps originally from the base of a seated statue and subsequently reworked into a mortar, carved in sunk relief, one edge with clear traces of the queen's cartouche and the remains of a two-feathered headdress belonging to her now-lost image, another edge with an inscription in hieroglyphic text identifying her as "the great wife of the king," "given life eternally" 151/2 in. (39.4 cm) high PROVENANCE Antiquities and Souvenirs of the Grand Tour, Christie's East, 2 March 1995, lot 16.
