Description : Ancient Egypt, Middle Kingdom, ca. 2040 to 1802 BCE. A charming alabaster jar with a rounded body that widens as it rises. A wide, round mouth with a slight rim reveals the drilled interior. Alabaster, which is a form of gypsum or calcite, was quarried along the length of the Nile, from Giza to just south of Luxor, and the Egyptians made its carved forms famous throughout the ancient world. This vessel may have been used to hold pigment, cosmetics, or an offering.
