This is the rating and price for Akan Figural Comb Duafe Engraved On Stand, 20th century

Description : Additional Information: ,Wooden combs known as Duafe among the Akan peoples of Ghana are prized possessions of women. Well carved examples were considered as valued objects to be displayed and were more often kept as heirlooms rather than actually used to comb hair. Duafe ,(combs), are carved most often in shallow relief and women examples are given as stylized figures. Ranging in size from small combs of only a few teeth they could range in size to more than 30 inches height! Some were even covered in gold foil if carved for women of the royal lineage. Women might have a number of combs in their collection receiving them from husbands or admirers and family. They were part of her cosmetic kit and kept as heirlooms as mothers might pass a comb on to their daughter or as was the case in the past when the owner died to have them buried with her. Combs are divided into two or three parts depending upon the complexity of the comb. It was traditional to have at least seven teeth on a comb as the number had significance for the Akan. The handle was possibly divided into two parts, both of which might be decorated. This included the flat body that held the teeth and the top which was often sculpted. Some combs were so large and elaborate that they must have served as prestige objects rather than functioning combs.
