Description : Hornbill figures, calledÊSetien or Porpianong,Êwere used by the Lo and Poro societies. Ivory Coast, Mali, Burkina Faso and Ghana. A symbol of fertility and the original ancestor cult, the hornbill was the mythological founder of the Senufo people. A well sculpted bird standing on a circular platform, with a long beak along the belly and the body covered with Bronze-Brass diamond and other style motifs through out body. Sometime in mask form figures were originally worn on the head during long dances and processions. TheÊSetien, hermaphrodictic, represent procreation, with their long hooked beaks touching their protruding stomachs that they have fertilized, therefore being the carrier of life and a symbol of continuity to future generations.
