Description : AFRICAN TRIBAL ART BENIN CAST BRASS HEAD - (South-South region of Nigeria) Portraying a cast brass head of a man with a conical textured headdress and wearing a plate under the chin. Using the lost wax method, casters were the highest ranking members of the craft guild in Benin society. Benin casting dates to the 13th century, and reflects the influence of the Portuguese who arrived in the 15th century Benin art was used as currency in liu of slave trafficking. This was an important factor in preventing Benin societal decline. Unsigned. Condition good. Early 20th century. 4H x 5.5 long.
