Description : West Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, East Kasai District, Songye culture, Ca. 1940-1950. Ritual instrument called a katadora or kashekeskeke by Luba diviners. The wooden armlet is carved in the form of a circle with a Kalebwe style head and face at the top and two feet emerging from the bottom of the armlet. Artifacts such as this example are held by the diviner and his client when used in ceremonies. Wood is of lovely carmel, brown hues and quite smooth. A similar artifact was published in Masterpieces from Central Africa. The Tervuren Museum. Prestel. 1997. Item #82. Wonderful provenance, collected in situ. Size: 7-1/4 tall x 4-1/2 wide.
