Description : Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kwilu River Region, Pende Peoples 20th century. An incised vessel or container with threaded twine run through and a central circular carved section with geometric incised patterns. The interior with a rim and key hole slot has remnants of orange or red pigment possibly indicating use for storing pigments. Size 5 3/4 H The Pende people are renowned for their artistic expression, especially their masks and sculptures. They create a variety of art used for rituals, ceremonies, and performances. These art is often characterized by bold geometric patterns, strong lines, and contrasting colors. Collected prior to 2008, ex-Lacy Gallery (Vanna & Lee Lacy collection), Los Angeles CA. Lacy Gallery was founded upon six decades of collecting ethnographic and fine art. Lee Lacy was a distinguished Hollywood producer of iconic TV series and commercials.
