Description : This female mask with horns and double birds vertical head crest and fine facial detailed carvings, slit eye's, was danced in village festivals celebrating important occasions such as harvests and weddings. Commissioned by individual wearers, the masks represent particular totems, personalities or themes. The double birds on the top are often dualities such as male/female. As in many African tribal cultures, Guru Ivory Coast masks are/were worn by dancers in sacred ceremonies, sometimes related to secret-society initiations. Wood and pigment paint .
