Description : West Africa, Mali, Djenne peoples, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. An elegant pottery vessel boasting a fascinating form with a round yet stable base, a bulbous body, a carinated shoulder, and a conical spout surmounted by a gently flared rim. Nicely burnished, the red-slipped surface of the jar has been decoratively incised with horizontal bands and vertical and diagonal striations formed from multitudes of petite dashed lines. Size: 7.9 Diameter x 12.6 H (20.1 cm x 32 cm) Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Condition report : Professionally repaired with restoration over break lines. Area of fire-darkening on side, minor chip to rim, and expected surface wear throughout, all commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with liberal remains of dashed lines. Earthen deposits throughout.
