Description : AFRICAN CARVED WOOD MASK - Cameroon, Gabon,. Republic of Congo. Kwele masks were worn during performances as an antidote to witchcraft known as a beete ritual. Masks have a whitened heart shaped face and non-existent mouth. This Kwele mask with 2 horns represents an antelope, whose meat was ritualistically seasoned with medicines and eaten at conclusion of beete ceremony. Some erosion and wood loss, discoloration and wear as seen. Attributed to late 19th, early 20th century. 9H x 15W
