Description : Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Biombo (Bena Biombo, Bashibiombo) peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An intriguing hand-carved wooden face mask with bulging eyes and high-arching brows, a triangular nose with delineated nostrils, a protruding tubular mouth, and nicely contoured cheeks with a pair of drilled holes beneath. The face, chin, and forehead are all embellished with densely-carved bands of ritual scarification markings, and a singular crested horn projects from the top. Several holes are drilled into the periphery to attach a larger textile or grassy costume. Areas of the eyelids, cheeks, and chin are painted with a chalky-white kaolin pigment which nicely complements the lustrous espresso-hued patina. Custom wooden display stand included. Title : African Biombo Wood / Kaolin Mask
Condition report : Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, minor nicks around peripheries and facial features, with some fading to carved scarification marks as well as kaolin pigmentation, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits and dark-brown patina throughout.
