Description : Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Biombo (Bena Biombo, Bashibiombo) peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An intriguing hand-carved wooden face mask with bulging eyes and high-arching brows, a triangular nose with delineated nostrils, a protruding tubular mouth, and nicely contoured cheeks with a pair of drilled holes beneath. The face, chin, and forehead are all embellished with densely-carved bands of ritual scarification markings, and a singular crested horn projects from the top. Several holes are drilled into the periphery to attach a larger textile or grassy costume. Areas of the eyelids, cheeks, and chin are painted with a chalky-white kaolin pigment which nicely complements the lustrous espresso-hued patina. Custom wooden display stand included.
