Description : Original vintage advertising poster for the Creative Playthings toy shop in Manhattan, New York, designed by South African toy maker and illustrator Fredun Shapur (b. 1929). This is one of a series of ten posters created by Shapur, illustrating the different forms of play – dramatic, active, social etc – and the products available in the shop. In addition to going on sale at Creative Playthings, the poster designs were also used for wrapping paper and in the company catalogue. Shapur’s signature style – bold blocks of colour, androgynous faces, graphic simplified shapes – is evident in this design, which shows a child dressed in green and white, kneeling in front of two purple and green triangles reminiscent of puzzle pieces, craft paper or origami, all against a red background.
