This is the rating and price for A Tschokwe comb

Description : of flat rectangular form, with ten long 'teeth' each tapering to a point and housed in an elaborately incised rectangular section forming the shoulders, the mask-like head with coffee bean mouth and eyes and wearing a traditional coiffure incised on the reverse with repeating rows of zig zag motif; medium brown patina. height 7 3/4 in. (19.7cm.) Joseph and Doris Gerofsky possess an innate appreciation of African sculpture. They respect and admire works which, they feel, not only communicate oral history but also express the artists' deepest inner feelings within the limiting boundaries of their tribal styles. This sensitivity, and the natural, visceral reaction to power and originality in African art is clearly illustrated by the eclectic and exceptional collection which they have assembled over a time span of nearly five decades. As an international exporter of textiles and fibers, Mr. Gerofsky developed numerous liaisons in Africa and around the world. This allowed him access to contacts and information which in turn gave him a broad, deeper insight into the religious and social importance of the works he loved. Doris Gerofsky's earlier background as an artist added a dimension of beauty in their choice of acquisitions. Friendships with several scholars, curators and noted collectors contributed valuable advice and influence which is seen in the strength of form, evident in many of the pieces in this collection. Throughout the years that Mr. and Mrs. Gerofsky have been avid private collectors, their passion and generosity also extended to the public. They have gifted many works in their collection to institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Museum of African Art, The Brooklyn Museum, Newark Museum, as well as to universities and museums around the country. A number of other works will be offered in this sale.
