Description : minute control marks only, circa 1897 the shaped blade bordered with cast applied foliate decoration and a cartouche enclosing galloping horses below the British royal armorials, inscribed below the crest and motto of Hely-Hutchinson, initialled HWP on the underside, carved ebony handle 30 cm, 11 3/4 in overall length The inscription reads Presented to His Excellency The Hon: Sir Walter Francis Hely-Hutchinson.K.C.M.G. on his laying the foundation Stone of New Colonial Offices Pietermaritzburg Mar 1897 Sir Walter (1849-1913) was appointed Governor and Commander in Chief of the Cape of Good Hope in 1901 and appointed Privy Councillor in 1907. He married May Justice in 1881, by whom he had four children.
