This is the rating and price for A Small, Checkered Nafana Bedu Mask., 1897

Austin, 'Travels Life in Ashanti and Jaman' London: Archibald Constable, 1897), 'Among the most impressively scaled masks in sub-saharan Africa, they serve to actually rid communities of disease or to insure against possible sickness. They also are called upon to avert agricultural disaster, human infertility an severe drought.' (Bravman, René A., 'Gur and Manding Masquerades in Ghana', African Arts, XIII-1, 1979, pp. 44-51). Provenance Collected in situ in Bondoukou region (Ivory Coast) in the 1960s. Belgian collection. Yale GvR 102076.
