Description : A Roman bronze decorative roundel depicting a male figure resting on the back of a lion, c. 1st - 3rd Century AD, depicted bearded and nude (Herakles strangling the Nemean Lion?), his right arm around the neck of the beast left held out behind him, in the field to rt., what appears to be a dolphin. D: 1 7/8 (4. 5 cm). Intact, nice deep green patina. Ex property from the collection of Joseph Klein (1899-1987), New York City. Mr. Klein sought out and acquired these souvenirs as part of his vast collecting interests. Said to have collected in the manner of an 18th century connoisseur, his overall collection showcased his diverse array of artifacts acquired over a period of 45 years and included the art of ancient China, Egypt, Persia, Greece and Rome.
