Description : of immense hollowed cylindrical form, and composed of numerous friezes encircling the whole including a row of fourteen miniature masks, each with pendant braided beard in high relief beneath varied geometric motifs and a second row of sixteen similarly carved masks beneath a dramatic row of raised zigzag motif encircling the shaft, fine aged encrusted patina with 'N229' in white pigment on the base with traces of red pigment. height 72in. (1.83m.) C., The Language of African Art, 24 May-7 September 1970 As Visona (1993: figure 296) notes, 'The visual and spiritual focus of Eastern Lagoons age-grade ceremonies are the great drums... in addition to symbolizing the physical and supernatural strength of the group, a great drum is often believed to embody the spiritual presence of the communities ancestors and tutelary spirits. The powerful tones of the drum summon men to the village from the surrounding forest when a member of their age-grade has died, and in the past its drum beats called men to war and accompanied them to battle.'.
