Description : A Coptic pilgrim’s flask of St. Menas, Egypt, c. AD 480 - 650, one side depicting St. Menas with nimbus and curly hair, his arms outstretched in blessing, flanked by two camels, beaded border around. The opposite side with Greek inscription A?OY MHNA EY?O (Saint Menas Blessing) within a wreath. 3 ¼ x 2 ½ in. (8.3 x 6.4 cm). Light deposits. A bit of a more unusual example. Cf. Bailey, Ptolemaic and Roman Terracottas from Egypt, p. 121, no 3449. Ex collection of John J. Slocum, Rhode Island.
