During the 2nd Millennium B.C. the imagery of Canaanite bronze gods was derived from foreign, and particularly Egyptian, deities. The conical crown is thought to be influenced by the White Crown of Upper Egypt and the 'smiting god' type resembles images of Egyptian pharaohs triumphing over their enemies. These warrior-type figures are thought to represent the storm god, Baal. For a similar 'smiting god' figure see O. Negbi,
Canaanite Gods in Metal, Tel Aviv, 1976, p. 112, fig. 128 1318.Condition report : The figure appears to be intact, with no visible repair or restoration. The proper right leg is bent out of true, as visible in the catalogue illustration. There is some black marker ink on the lower back edge of the proper left leg. The attribute the figure was holding in the raised right hand is now missing, as are the crown elements which were once attached to the holes on each side of the pointed headdress. There is a small pitted hole on the back of the kilt on the third band. Other minor pitting and wear overall. Some small patches of green corrosion in places. The figure has tangs attached on the underside of the broken away legs, and is affixed to a small wood mount as visible in the catalogue illustration.
The figure has been cleaned, but the details are well preserved.Bonhams, auctioneer
